Retail Taxonomy

Purpose

This document defines the official terminology adopted by UC-BoK.

Every term used throughout the framework SHALL comply with these definitions.

Whenever possible, definitions are business-oriented and vendor-neutral.


Taxonomy Structure

The taxonomy is organized into the following categories:

Enterprise

Retail Enterprise

An organization whose primary business consists of selling products or services to consumers through one or more sales channels.


Channel

A commercial interaction point through which customers purchase products or services.

  • Call Center

Touchpoint

Any interaction between a customer and the retailer.

A touchpoint does not necessarily support transactions.

Customer

Customer

A person or organization purchasing products or services.


Customer Identity

The unique representation of a customer across all channels.


Customer Profile

The collection of customer information maintained by the retailer.


Customer Journey

The sequence of interactions between a customer and the retailer before, during and after a purchase.


Commerce

Commerce

The business activity of selling products or services.


Unified Commerce

A retail operating model in which business capabilities, customer information, inventory, orders and fulfillment are managed consistently across every channel.


Omnichannel

A customer experience strategy that integrates multiple channels.

Unlike Unified Commerce, Omnichannel does not necessarily imply shared business capabilities or shared systems.


Order

Order

A formal request from a customer to purchase one or more products or services.


Basket

The temporary collection of items selected before an order is submitted.


Reservation

A temporary allocation of inventory without transferring ownership.


Allocation

The assignment of available inventory to satisfy an order.


Split Order

A customer order fulfilled through multiple shipments or locations.


Fulfillment

Fulfillment

The process of delivering purchased products to customers.


Click & Collect

A fulfillment process where products purchased online are collected by the customer in a physical store.


Ship From Store

A fulfillment process where inventory located in a store is used to satisfy an order.


Ship To Store

A fulfillment process where products are shipped to a store for customer collection.


Return

The process through which ownership of purchased products is transferred back to the retailer.


Inventory

Inventory

The quantity of products available within the retail network.


Available To Promise (ATP)

The quantity of inventory that can be committed to future orders.


Inventory Visibility

The capability to determine inventory availability across all locations.


Stock Location

A physical or logical place where inventory is stored.

Pricing

Price

The monetary value assigned to a product or service.


Price List

A collection of prices applicable to one or more customers or channels.


Promotions

Promotion

A temporary commercial rule modifying the selling conditions of one or more products.


Coupon

A promotional entitlement redeemable by a customer.


Voucher

A monetary or promotional value redeemable against future purchases.


Loyalty

Loyalty Program

A business program rewarding repeat customer interactions.


Reward

A benefit granted to customers through loyalty participation.


Points

A virtual currency accumulated through loyalty activities.


Payment

Payment

The transfer of funds from the customer to the retailer.


Authorization

The confirmation that a payment instrument may be charged.


Settlement

The financial process transferring funds to the retailer.


Store

Store

A physical retail location.

Within Unified Commerce, a store may simultaneously act as:

  • Sales Channel
  • Fulfillment Center
  • Return Center
  • Inventory Location
  • Customer Service Point

Product

Product

A commercial item offered for sale.


SKU

The smallest sellable inventory unit uniquely identified by the retailer.


Catalog

The structured collection of products offered by the retailer.


Architecture

Business Capability

What the business does.


Business Process

How the business executes a capability.


Application Capability

A software responsibility supporting one or more business processes.


Application Component

A deployable software system implementing one or more application capabilities.

Application Components

Domain Event

A significant business occurrence within a business domain.


API

A contract exposing business capabilities to external consumers.
